Quite apart from our political leaders gurning, sorry, grinning from every platform possible, they have now managed to find their way onto that most innocent of objects, the ice cream tub.
Ben & Jerry’s has announced the release of five limited edition versions of their leading flavours, each renamed for one of the parties in the general election. Going on sale from now until the election on 6 May, it’s time to pick a side.
Tory leader David Cameron’s sweet and caring approach is captured with the sickly caramel in Cameron Chew Chew (although after today, egg might have been a more appropriate flavour). On the other side of the house/ice cream counter, Ben & Jerry’s believe current Prime Minister Gordon “packs a punch” worthy of the dense flavour of Gordon Fudge Brownie. We presume this is based on political prowess, rather than any convenient pun.
But what of flavour of the moment, Nick Clegg? Well, the Lib-Dem leader gets a bit of a raw deal in the ice cream stakes, as his flavour is in fact a rather wimpy and unimaginatively named low-fat frozen yoghurt, Cheesecake Clegg. Lacking in substance? Never.
There are two other flavours to choose from: the Green Party’s Baked Alucas, and Fairtrade Fairly Nuts Monster Raving Loonies, which Ben & Jerry’s promise is “mmmmonsteringly good.” The ice cream makers are inviting people to vote on their favourite flavour in order to “make your voice herd.” Political satire has never tasted so good.
