The wait is finally over: the all-new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle has arrived. This exclusive footage, shot April 18 at the New York City Reveal Event, offers a first glimpse at an automotive and cultural icon, reinvented.
The Beetle story began in the United States in 1949; the 2012 Beetle continues that story for a new generation. Redesigned for only the second time in history, the all-new Beetle is a modern interpretation of the iconic Beetle design, complete with enhanced performance and fun-to-drive dynamics that define the Volkswagen driving experience.
German-engineered with no compromises, the 2012 Beetle offers the dynamic, fun-to-drive handling that defines the Volkswagen driving experience. In addition to a sportier, retro look, the 2012 Beetle will offer such now-expected amenities as Bluetooth, touch-screen radio, branded audio systems, navigation and ambient lighting. It also offers premium options such as an available panoramic sunroof, Fender Premium audio system, 18- or 19-inch wheels, keyless access and more.
The 2012 Beetle will offer three engines: the 2.5L gasoline five cylinder, the 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel and the 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic on 2.5L models. Volkswagen’s acclaimed Direct-Shift Gearbox® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a 6-speed manual will come standard.
The 2012 Beetle 2.0L TDI is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever. The quiet, four-cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb. feet of torque. It meets all U.S. emission limits and offers a manufacturer estimate of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city and 33 mpg combined.
