Steve Stoute, Kendrick Lamar, and Jameel Spencer Speak On Rocawear’s Tanning Effect

Rocawear deserves credit for evolving so fluidly over its twelve-year history. What started solely under the umbrella of “urban” fashion where jeans and T-shirts reign supreme, has consciously rebranded itself, refining its image. As part of its current “That’s Rocawear” campaign, the clothing line released a video with commentary from Steve Stoute, Kendrick Lamar, and Rocawear Chief Marketing Officer, Jameel Spencer, detailing the company’s transition and how they’ve been able to survive the flood of urban lines spawned by the hip-hop culture.

Interestingly enough, Rocawear’s continued relevance reflects it’s astute attention to the needs of its consumer while embracing the changing definition of the term “urban.” In the 2000s, “urban” is no longer confined to physical locations, but representative of a mind state. Recent advertisements featuring Zoe Saldana, Kevin Bacon, Naomi Campbell, and Victoria Beckham, as well as exotic photo shoots in Thailand and Africa are examples of Rocawear’s recognition of—as described in The Tanning Of America—a truly cross-cultural consumer, without sacrificing brand authenticity.

“Urban wear has become a little bit more sophisticated because the customer has become more sophisticated,” celebrity stylist, June Ambrose says in the video. “Even this brand from inception was about the urban lifestyle, urban culture. And I think that consumer has truly grown up.”

DAME DASH RESURRECTS ROC-A-FELLA RECORDS

Remember when Roc-A-Fella Records was the hottest label in hip-hop back in the late 90s and early 2000s?

Dame Dash does too, and hopes to restore the label that he was bought out of back to its former glory.

The Roc roster really only has one active artist on it at present time, Kanye West. Most of its other signees, including the label’s co-founder Jay-Z, have moved on to other recording plantations.

Dame plans to release the debut album from Curren$y as the relaunched label’s first release on June 15th.

“Def Jam or Universal bought the brand,” Dash told MTV. “I think the ‘beef’ [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn’t want me or [Roc-A-Fella's third co-founder Karriem "Biggs" Burke] to be a part of it. That’s really where it was at. Now that he doesn’t work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn’t have the right to use the name. So there’s no reason for us not to use it. It’s there, and it’s a brand that’s not being used. So I was like, ‘I’ll take it.’ It always meant something to me.”

Dash secured the deal through Island Def Jam chairman L.A. Reid, who previously worked with Dash through his shortlived Damon Dash Music Group.

After the release of Curren$y’s album, Roc-A-Fella will release Ski Beatz’s long awaited 24 Hour Ski School mixtape.

IN THE MEANTIME: DAMON DASH PRESENTS...BLAK ROC

Though Damon Dash may not be dancing in all of your favorite Jay-Z videos anymore or screaming on executives about how he and his team is not being treated fairly. He is still hard at work bringing something new, fresh and edgy to the hip-hop culture just as he has done in the past. With the help of his blackberry he was able to link The Black Keys with a diverse group of hip-hop entertainers to produce an independent release that true hip-hop fans will appreciate. To go along with the music he was able to tie in Chevrolet who exclusively designed the "Blakroc" Camaro. This is another great business move by Mr. Dash that is helping a lot of talented people in the industry. You can tell he was setting this up all along but he had to get the people back on his side after releasing "The Jim Jones Story" which also was recieved well by hip-hop heads. I am looking forward to The Black Keys tour dates and hope that I can catch up with Dame "Backstage"!!!

The 2010 Chevy Camaro speaks for itself with its sculptured body and passionate engineering that left nothing to be desired. Carl Black has simply added the sizzle to match the passion and creativity of the BlakRoc project.

From the ground up, the BlakRoc Camaro has been equipped with sleek, stylish accents that tie in with the BlakRoc brand. Starting with the BR logo inlayed front and center.

Blacking it out turns up the heat. The windows are tinted, the taillights are smoked, and even the Chevy bow tie goes dark to complete the look. The Black on Black classic combination subtly comes to life with flat black racing stripes front to back with the BlakRoc logo inlayed in metallic on the hood and rear spoiler.
